Texas to Albuquerque, NM

Today we covered 600 km, driving clear across the Texas panhandle from Amarillo to Alberqueque in New Mexico.

We began our day at the Alibates Flint Mine http://www.nps.gov/alfl/index.htm just outside of Amarillo. This is a National Park site, and a ranger took us on a walking tour to the old Indian flint mines. What is so special about the flint here is that it is agatised, making it also a semi-precious stone (and a higher quality of flint).

After a night of 55km/hr winds rocking the RV, we wandered through the National Park in not quite so strong winds, but enough to knock us about and chill us to the bone. However, once driving and a good 100km from Amarillo the wind died down and the day warmed up.

We are now in Albuqueque for the next 5 days.

With ranger on our walking tour - very cold

Alibates Flint Mine - small hollows, about 2000 of them throughout the park - evidence of where the Indian people  1000 years ago dug by hand for flint

Benedict loved finding pretty rocks

Tori's beautiful striated specimen

Oliver's rock with a vein of quartz through it

Leaving Amarillo, wind farms working overtime today

Welcome to New Mexico!

See I do drive!

The landscape changed gradually, until suddenly we were at an elevation of 6000ft and looking at mountains

And if you get to 6 and 1/4 mph, it's a ticket for you!
